Colonized by France in 1635, the island has subsequently remained a French possession except for three brief periods of foreign occupation.

Located in the between the Caribbean Sea and North Atlantic Ocean, north of Trinidad and Tobago. The economy is based on sugarcane, bananas, tourism, and light industry. and the currency is the Euro.

A population of 429,510 occupy 1,100 sq km.

The weather is tropical and humid, moderated by trade winds with a rainy season (June to October). It is vulnerable to devastating hurricanes about every eight years, at 14º 40' N, 6º 00' W.

The land is mountainous with an indented coastline and accented by the dormant volcano, Montagne Pelee.
